‘Clevatess’ LGBTQ+ Stars on Found Family & Why Queer Fans Love the Series
One of our fave magical trios is back on the scene, and this time around, they’re enrolling in school to uncover some dark secrets!
Based on Yūji Iwahara’s manga series of the same name, Clevatess is an action-packed and magical AF adventure that follows a revived fallen hero named Alicia as she and Beast King Clevatess (or Klen, when in disguise) travel alongside a baby prince named Luna to uncover what exactly it means to be human.
“One of the Lords of Dark Beasts, Clevatess’s reign shatters when he revives a hero he personally slayed and adopts an orphaned humanoid baby—the last hope to save a dying world,” the official description reads. “Now bound together, what fate awaits this unlikely trio?”
Episode Ever After got to sit down and chat with the stars of English dub of the beloved show, Alicia actor Katie Wetch and Klen star Morgan Berry, about the show’s themes of found family, identity, and why exactly LGBTQ+ fans like Clevatess so much.
“I’m nonbinary and genderfluid, that’s where I sit under that umbrella, so I love getting to voice characters that have a more androgynous look to them or require a more androgynous voice,” Morgan Berry tells Episode Ever After about getting to play a character like Klen. “I love being able to portray that, because there’s not always a set gender. There might be for Klen, of course, but his design is so… I love it.”
Berry continued: “I do love that at first glance you might not know. Is this a boy, is this a girl? We don’t know. It’s a mystery to some, and you’d have to watch the show to know. And I really do love that style. It’s one of my favorites.”
“As someone who is also genderfluid and queer, I’m just so grateful to be a part of something like that,” Katie Wetch adds. “All of the throughlines of identity and being able to wrestle and come to conclusions, or not, and have it be open and be who you are. There’s so much in here that’s incredible.”
