‘Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation’ Star Madeleine Morris Talks Season 3 & Why Anime Fans Always Love Second Chances

The first part of the third season of Studio Bind and Crunchyroll’s Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation just wrapped, and yet, fans still can’t get enough.

One of the platform’s highest-rated isekai shows and based on the Japanese light novel series of the same name, the beloved anime tells the story of Rudeus Greyrat, a former loner who, after saving teens from a speeding truck, gets reincarnated into a fantastical world where magic exists and where he can get a second chance at a new, fulfilling life.

The first season of the series premiered in 2021, and now three seasons in, Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation is getting into the nitty gritty, and Episode Ever After got to talk to voice actress Madeleine Morris, who plays none other than Rudeus himself, to learn more about the escapism of iskeai anime, how she got introduced to the world of Mushoku Tensei, what some of her favorite sequences from the show are, and the timeless appeal of second chances and the concept of reincarnation anime being so beloved!

“I find that this is the conversation that I have with older Mushoku Tensei fans in our 30s and 40s and older, that is the aspect that a lot of us are drawn to is the idea of ‘If you could do it all over again knowing what you know now, what would you change? Who else would you be?’” Morris told Episode Ever After when asked about the show’s ongoing theme of redemption and second chances. “Genuinely, it's so fulfilling. It's fun to be able to play in that space. It is profound to be able to play pretend in this particular space and to not have it necessarily be where I'm playing inside of a rote kind of redemption story but getting to embody a very flawed individual who's had terrible things happen to him, that caused other terrible things to become of him. And now, where do you put all that? Where does all that go when you get to try again? And how do you sort that out? And how do you identify those aspects of yourself that are that are things that you can improve on and things that you need to leave behind.”

“I think there's a lot of beautiful, beautiful humanity to this story and these characters, Rudeus especially,” she continued. “I feel very fortunate that I've gotten to be a part of something that has proven to be so cathartic for a lot of people.”
