Bringing ‘The Love Hypothesis’ to Life: Director Claire Scanlon and Producer Elizabeth Cantillon on Chemistry, Adaptation, and Fan Expectations

When a romance novel reaches this amount of popularity, translating its beloved pages to the screen comes with a unique brand of pressure. Ali Hazelwood’s The Love Hypothesis captured readers immediately with its charming STEM academia setting, fake-dating trope, and unforgettable dynamic between Adam and Olive. Bringing that magic into an adaptation required a clear creative vision, one anchored by director Claire Scanlon and producer Elizabeth Cantillon.

Episode Ever After had the opportunity to sit down with Scanlon and Cantillon to discuss the upcoming film. Both shared insightful reflections on their own expectations for the adaptation, but more importantly, how deeply they care about delivering an experience fans will love.

Long before The Love Hypothesis became a global publishing phenomenon, producer Elizabeth Cantillon secured the film rights, laying a grounded foundation for screenwriter Sarah Rothschild to build upon. For the creative team, honouring Ali Hazelwood's source material wasn't just a duty to the readers, it was a personal passion.

When we asked about honoring the source material, producer Elizabeth Cantillon responded: "When you know something is beloved like that, you don’t want to go against it. We all liked the book ourselves, so why would we not want to honor it and do it justice?"

A massive part of that fidelity came down to casting. Bringing Tom Bateman on board as Dr. Adam Carlsen & Lili ReinHart as Olive Smith anchored the film's emotional weight, particularly in moments where Adam’s guarded exterior finally gives way.

When asked about bringing that dynamic to life on set, director Claire Scanlon praised the performances: "When you have that emotional intimacy, you’re just ready for the tension to be released." Scanlon noted how Bateman and the cast exceeded expectations in capturing that raw, quiet chemistry during the fan-favourite sushi date sequence.

Unlike standard romantic comedies set in non-descript offices, The Love Hypothesis thrives on its hyper-specific academic setting. For Cantillon and Scanlon, treating the Stanford research lab as a "hero location" was essential to making Olive's world feel authentic.

When we asked about building the realistic lab environment, producer Elizabeth Cantillon shared: "PhD candidates at Stanford spend all of their time in the lab," emphasizing how critical it was for the sets to feel lived-in.

To maintain that accuracy, the production leaned heavily on technical expertise. Hazelwood herself advised the team on the nuances of academia, while an on-set consulting scientist guided the cast through the physical realities of lab work to ensure the film never lost its realistic STEM edge.

One of the most meaningful evolutions from page to screen happens in the film's climax. While the movie retains the romantic conclusion readers adore, the resolution was restructured to lean into female agency, friendship, and Olive’s personal growth.

When we asked director Claire Scanlon about changing the third-act conflict after their intimate Chapter 16 scene, specifically where Adam leaves her on read, and why they chose to restructure the ending with Ali Hazelwood's blessing, Scanlon responded: "It made it a little more female-forward. It was Anh telling Olive, 'What is Olive Smith going to do?' It became about Olive figuring out how to solve her own predicament."

Rather than relying entirely on outside rescue, Olive navigates her obstacles directly, supported by her inner circle of Anh, Malcolm, Jeremy, and Adam, a change made with Hazelwood’s full blessing.

Reflecting on Olive's complete arc, director Claire Scanlon added: "What I love about the film is that it starts with Olive and ends with Olive. As much as she is aided throughout the whole story, she is still standing on her own, about to teach her own class at Stanford, and that’s all on her. Everyone has obstacles - it’s the way she navigated them that brought her to the place where you see her at the end of the film."
